Accurate and effective climate science communication is more important now than ever, particularly in the face of continued climate change denialism. Fictional narratives have recently been found to play a vital role in this process of awareness-raising. However, there is little research on the fact that climate change communication through fiction is not merely a recent phenomenon, but one whose patterns can be traced far into the past, to the Romantic-era writings of Mary Shelley and beyond. The Climate/Science/Fiction Symposium, the first major workshop organised by the Zurich Science Fiction Network (ZSFN), aims to fill this gap in the scholarly discourse by bringing together experts on both climate fiction and climate science to discover how climate fiction and science fiction have historically influenced public awareness of climate change as well as climate science itself, and how learning from past climate storytelling can help us improve climate-scientific storytelling and -making in the future. The Symposium is open to the public, though space is limited.
